Abstract

This study explores how members of Surabaya dance communities interpret fashion culture as a form of self‑existence and identity. Using a qualitative approach with thematic analysis, data were gathered from in‑depth interviews with five active community members aged 18–25. Findings reveal that fashion serves as a symbolic medium to express individuality, strengthen group belonging, and differentiate one’s character from others. Social Identity Theory helps explain how individuals categorize themselves through shared styles, internalize group norms, and establish uniqueness within the community. Social media also plays a major role in shaping styles and enhancing identity performance. This study contributes to understanding fashion as a visual language that reinforces personal and collective identity in urban youth culture
